My Jewelry and Handcraft Exhibition 2020

I share my jewelry and handcraft exhibition (at my school) with pics and texts now here now, because can't do it on the other way. Will do the Finnish one after this.

It's called 

COLOURS TO THE AMBIGUOUS WORLD - TOUCH OF THE METAL 10 YEARS

" This exbition is part of the vocational examination of an artisan. I chose for the exhibition the pieces of jewelry and handcrafted things which I have made throughout the years and currently in Kangas Creative Campus.

Colours the Ambiguous World - because I hope the colours will bring joy to this dark and grey times we are living through now in this distressing world. I have made jewelry now for ten years using the name touch of the Metal, so I thought to merge them together now.

I graduated as a stone smith artisan in 1995. That school concentrated on large stones and rocks, but we made some jewelry too. At my internship I cut some stones for the foundation of the Kärkistensalmi Bridge, which a very well-known bridge here in central Finland. Never done any stonework as my work though.

Then fast forward to the year of  2010. 

Then I found Linda Jones' book The Complete Guide to Wire & Beaded Jewellery at a bookstore. That was it! I got very excited about wrapping the wire. Back then, I lived in a small flat in Helsinki. After my hype had started, my kitchen table was bursting full of the wires, lots of many kinds of beads and stones and various tools, and I made all my jewelry on that table until I moved back to Jyväskylä, my hometown. Now that same table is my craft table.

I made pieces of jewelry for myself and as gifts. I also sold some of them at different kinds of fairs. I have an Etsy Shop too, but it's on the hiatus now.

Another English woman, Abby Hook, with her book, Wirejewelry Masterclass, inspired me a lot too to make more wirejewelry pieces.

I also found a lot of tutorials on Youtube. I spotted Christina Larsen's CSLDesigns wirejewelry tutorials there. She's making wirejewelry using many kinds of techniques. She has published a book also, it's called Kumihimo Wirework Made Easy. And because of her, I found kumihimo, the Japanese braiding technique for threads.

In the autumn of 2019 I started the studies of the vocational examination of artisan here in Kangas Creative Campus. This place called Kangas has been a paper factory before, and it's a factory where my father worked around 30 years.

Here in Kangas I discovered the very old tablet weaving technique. I did combined it with my pieces of jewelry and accessories too. We also had The Creative Circular Economy courses, and after that I have been using recycled materials and environmentally sustainable materials for my jewelry.

I participated also in the exhibition of Creative Circular Economy project with my #MetallinKosketusGoesKiertotalous (TouchOfTheMetalGoesCircularEconomy in English) jewelry collection.

Then came corona!

When Finland and world shut down because of the pandemic in the spring - I started to crochet! I absolutely fell in love with the colours of the different yarns and colour combinations! I have already tested the crochetingfor my circular economy pieces and am familiar with crocheting for 30 years or more years.

Next I discovered the crocheting tutorials on Youtube! Learned different kinds of crocheting techniques, which I have not known before. I got very excited about the granny squares, which were, strangely enough, not familiar to me from crocheting previously.

I have coloured mandalas on the adults colouring books, so they were familiar to me earlier. Now I wanted to crochet those rounds using colourful yarns.

Spotted also the funny and inspirational #JaydaInStitches videos on Youtube! Those videos have really spared me during corona times. Loving them!

Pinterest is also a treasure for the crocheters.

I have crocheted and will crochet the pieces of jewelry, decorations and accessories. 

And will crochet the mandalas too, for example, for the birthday gifts for frieds who will have their round number birthdays.

- Mandalas on the exhibition and as my crafted things are only colourful and crocheted rounds on this matter

- Touch of the Metal as a name comes from my liking of the metallic feeling. I also like metal sounds like the one which comes when the sword is taken out of its scabbard

- Thought about changing the name Touch of the Metal to another name when started to crochet more. But I do use metallic hooks when crocheting and I often combine metal parts to my works as well.

That is why, the touch of the metal.

Ensi kuussa, eli elokuussa tulee 10 vuotta kun olen tehnyt koruja ja koristeita, nyt on aika vähentää näitä eri paikkoja missä tekeleitäni jakelen. Ja yksi niistä on tämä blogi.

This year is what it is.

It has been hard. Too hard.

I'm leaving from this blog now. Don't know if I come back or not. 

On next month, on August, it has been 10 years I have been making jewelry and asseccories. Now it's time to decrease these places I'm sharing my things. Unfortunately this is one of them.

Trash design sähkökaappi / electricity cabinet

(Sorry, no English version)

Yksi tämän syksyn tehtävistä metallipuolella on ollut tämä:

Minä valitsin täysin uuden mutta jostain syystä poislaitetun pienen sähkökaapin.

Kaapin sisällä oli kaikenlaista, mitä sähkökaapissa kai pitää olla. Minä olin eka kertaa tälläisen kanssa tekemisissä.

Työsuunnitelmanani oli:

- irrottaa kaapista kaikki terävät osat

- ruuvata sisällä olevat osat siihen asentoon että siitä saisi säilytyslaatikon

- porata reikiä lisää kaapin sivuihin koristeeksi

- maalata kaappi ulkopuolelta 

- vuorata kaapin sisusta kierrätyshuovalla

Lisää reikiä kaapin sivuihin porasin pylväsporakoneella

Sen jälkeen siistin reikien reunat.

Sitten maalasin kaapin vihreällä vasaralakalla.



Kaappi on vielä kesken, enkä ole vielä ehtinyt tehdä muuta.
Päivitän tätä blogia sitten kun olen ehtinyt tehdä kaapin valmiiksi.

Kaapissa on nyt sisus.

Taitteilin mustasta kierrätyskorkista sisuksen kaappiin.

Korkki on niin jämäkkää materiaalia, joten ajattelin että kaapin sisus on nyt tälläinen irrallinen versio. Se olisi ollut muutenkin vaikea kiinnittää kaapin sivuihin.

No siinä se nyt on. Valmiina.

Valmis tulikukka ja Valon kaupunki -näyttely / Fireflower is finished and the City of Light exhibition

No niin.
Siitä on jo vähän aikaa kun minun tulikukka valmistui.
Ja siitä on myös aikaa kun Jyväskylän Valon Kaupunki -tapahtuma oli.

Minulla on ollut taas vähän vaikeuksia ja ongelmia omien laitteiden kanssa. Mutta nyt pitäisi kaikkien tarvittavien laitteiden viimein toimia.

Ja tässä tämä blogi vihdoin tulee.

Ja siinä se oli!
Mun metallinen tulikukka punottuna.

Sitten siihen hitsattiin tuo kynttilän alunen ja varsi, n.970mm pitunen pyöröteräs.

Sen pituus on nyt n.1270mm ja halkaisija noin 300mm.

Sitten sitä aseteltiin näyttelyä varten. Näyttelyä varten se seisoi hiekalla täytetyssä sinkkiämpärissä ja sitten hiekan päälle laitettiin sammalta ja jäkälää. Sammalta ja jäkälää oli muidenkin tulikukkien ympärillä. Se oli minusta kiva idea.

Siellä se sitten loisti muiden kanssa. Ei oikean tuikun kanssa kuitenkaan mutta ledituikun kuitenkin.

Okay.
It's been awhile since I finished my fireflower.
It's been also awhile since Jyväskylä's City of Light event was.

Have been having some problems and difficulties with my devices, but they all should work now just fine.
So here's the blog finally.

And there it was!
My wrapped metal fireflower.

Then the place for the candle was welded there. And a round steel stem too. The lenght of the stem was about 970 mm.

Its total lenght is now about 1270 mm and the diameter is about 300 mm.

Then we started to organize our Fireflower Forest exhibition.
My fireflower was standing in the zinc basket with full of sand and there was moss and lichen above the sand. There were fluffy moss and lichen all around our exhibition. I think it was a lovely idea.

And then it was there. Not with the real teacandle but with the led teacandle.
Shining with the others.

Then there's a video of our Fireflower Forest exhibition in total at the Hohtava Kangas event in the City of Light.

Vihdoin kotona! / Finally home!

Vähän enemmän edistystä / Little bit more of progress

Kiirettä on pitänyt koulussa! Huh!
Kun sitä on paljon muutakin opiskeltavaa kuin metallityöt.
Mutta nyt on uusia kuvia tulikukan edistymisestä.

Työssä on käytetty 10 mm pyöröterästä. Se on taivutettu kaariksi, joista toinen on katkaistu kukan terälehtien aihioiksi. Sitten kaaret on pistehitsattu kevyesti yhteen.

Sitten seuraavassa kuvassa näkyy jo, kun kukka on paremmin hitsattu yhteen ja pyöröteräksen päät on halkaistu ja vähän taivutettu.

Kukan keskelle on tarkoitus tulla paikka lämpökynttilälle tai muulle kynttilälle ja kuvassa näkyy pieni pyöreä teräslevyn palanen, josta se tulee. 

Noin 25 vuoteen en ole tuollaisia tehnyt ja hyvin onnistu.

Sitten olen alkanut jo punoa 2 mm:n teräslankaa kukan ympärille. 

Tästä kohdasta jatkan seuraavalla kerralla.

Kukkaan on vielä tulossa varsi ja sitten se, missä se seisoo.

Eli jatkuu...

It’s been busy time at school. Phew!

And I also have some other things to learn to than only the metal work.

But now I have new pics of my fire flower in progress.

Pics are among the Finnish text.

I have been using a 10 mm round steel bar. It has been bent into two curves and one of them is cut in half to be the blanks of the petals. Then the curves have been welded lightly together.

Then it has been welded stronger together and the ends of the bars had been cut in half and bent.

There will be a place for a tea light or another candle in the middle the flower. There’s that little piece of  round steel sheet on the picture, which will be a bottom of that candle thing. 

Haven’t done anything like that in 25 years and I think it went just fine.

Then I have started to wrap the flower with 2 mm steel wire.

The there’s the spot where I’m going to continue my wrapping on the next time, on the last big picture.

There will be a stem of course, for the flower. And also the thing, where it will stand on.

So the story continues...

Ensimmäinen tehtävänanto metallialan tuotevalmistuksessa oli metallinen "tulikukka".

Meidän tulikukat tulevat näytille Jyväskylän Valon kaupunki -tapahtumaan. Meidän koululla on iso osa tästä tapahtumasta.

Tässä ensimmäisiä luonnoksia.

The first assignment of the metal proseffional field was a metal "fire flower".

We will have an exhibition of our "fire flowers" on Jyväskylä's City of Light event. Our school has a big part of this event.

Uutta oppimassa / Learning new things

Olen aloittanut koulun.
Olen nyt opiskelemassa taideteollisuusalan käsityöntekijän ammattitutkintoa.
Koulussaolon aikana raportoin tänne blogiin projekteista, joita olen tekemässä.
Joten tämä on nyt tämän blogin HERÄTYS!

Edellisessä postauksessa valittelin minun vanhaa ja hidasta tietokonetta.
Se on edelleen sama vanha ja hidas, mutta koitan jotenkin pärjätä.

Paljon uutta ja mielenkiintoista edessä!

I have started a school.
I am studying now a craftsman's vocational examination of the arts and crafts.
When I'm at this school I have to report about the projects, which I am making at that moment.
So this is this blog's WAKE-UP!

On the previous blog I was complaining about my old and slow computer.
It is still the same old slow machine, but I'm trying to cope with it somehow.

Loads of new and interesting things ahead!

I guess, this will be quite an adventure!
